Salamanca City Guide for Tourists

Salamanca is a city northwest of Madrid and it takes about 2 hours to reach there. If you are going from Spain to Portugal or vice-versa then you must visit Salamanca as it lies between the two. It is a clean and neat city with good nightlife and a reputable university. Many foreigners go there to learn Spanish. The climate is nice and warm in summers and cold in winters.

The closest airport is in Valladolid; Madrid isn't far too.

September's second week is the time when Salamanca holds a famous festival called the Virgen de la Vega. Also, in September, the students come to this city for a new intake or the continuing students return. It gets really cold during the winter, so you must take a warm jacket if you intend to go there at that time.

Even though you can visit the places in this city within a day, it is worthwhile to stay there for another day.

Some of the things you can do in Salamanca:

It has a beautiful architecture of sandstone that is spread uniformly which gives it an amazing, consistent look.

On the Cathedral Nueva, try to spot the astronaut and the ice-cream cone and on the Universidad Civil, the Lucky Frog.

You can even learn Spanish at one of the oldest universities in Europe the University of Salamanca.

From Salamanca, you can visit the Ciudad Rodrigo and a walled-city, Zamora.

If you need car services, you can hire a car from easyCar which offers services in many places in Spain.

One of the prominent features of the city is the agricultural land. The landscape is amazing and you can see grass fields by bus with the New Cathedral situated on top. You can go straight to the cathedral after getting off the bus and then heading toward the Plaza Mayor by foot.

The New Cathedral is behind the Plaza Anaya and to the left is the Universidad Civil. You will notice the carving of the astronaut and ice-cream on the New Cathedral. On the Universidad Civil is carved the famous Lucky Frog. When you walk through the Rue Mayor, to the left, you will see the House of Shells (Casa de las Conchas) and la Clerecia after which you can see the Plaza Mayor. From there you can find many historical buildings and gorgeous churches nearby.
