Saint Kitts and Nevis is a federal two-island nation which is located Leeward Islands, the Capital City is Basseterre, and is located on the larger of the 2 islands St Kitts, the smaller islands of Nevis is located roughly 2 miles southeast of St. Kitts across the Narrows, which is a shallow channel. The French arrived on St Kitts in 1627 although a rivalry between the French and the British lasted over 100 years and resulted in a definite British victory at Brimstone Hill in 1782, it was at this time the islands became under British control. The islands were united with Anguilla in 1882; it then gained independence on September 19th 1983.
Brimstone Hill Fortress is a very historic place on the island, once used by the British to help them defeat the French during the rivalry; it is a UNESCO world heritage site and was designed by the British and built and maintained by the African slaves. It was used as a complete military community of the 18th Century and was used to protect the British from attacks from the sea, and because of the success of the defences built here Saint Kitts became known as the Gibraltar of the Caribbean. The hill itself is around 800 ft high and there are some very steep slopes which had to be controlled by engineering and probably at the loss of lives of some engineers, the walls are made from stone, which is hard volcanic rock the mortar which was used to cement the stones for the walls and structure was made from limestone by the African slaves who were very skilled engineers and this covers most of the middle and lower slopes, from the hill there is beautiful views of the mountains and neighbouring islands across the sea, it is a must see when you are in St Kitts and Nevis and have some spare time.
