Safety Tips You Can Teach Your Children

About the time your child turns three, and is able to run around and communicate

effectively with other individuals, it is time for you to start teaching them some simple safety rules. In the course of their childhood, they need to be taught certain values which will allow them to grow up as responsible individuals.

The down side of a childs innocence is that they also lack fear. It is important for you as a parent, to teach them what is safe and what isnt, so that they arent victim to any unwanted injuries of traumas.

Here are some simple Safety Tips that you need to instil in your child

1. Road safety is something that is of prime importance. Your child could be playing on the streets or crossing the road while walking to school. It is important that you practice with them how to cross the road and teach them the simple rules of safe road crossing.

2. Explain to them, how they must not step out between parked cars; and that they must look in both directions before crossing the road.

3. With a number of predators and perverts lurking around parks and playgrounds, teach your children how to treat strangers. Show them a secure route to walk through on their way to the park, their school or to their best friends home.

4. Also explain to them the difference between safe and unsafe play areas. Point out to them that busy roads and areas next to water bodies are dangerous and explain to them why.

5. As your children grow older make sure they know their full name, telephone number, name of their parents and address by heart. You may not be able to achieve this before your child is 6 or 7, so it is important for you to continue to reinforce this information in their minds.

6. Also give them safe ideas on how to ask for help, the type of people they are allowed to approach such as a shopkeeper, a mother with a child or a police officer. Also teach them how to make phone calls.

7. While your child is playing at home, they should be made aware of the dangers of sticking their fingers into electrical points, or leaning too much on an aluminium railing.

8. Teach them how to stay away from inflammable and sharp objects and also instil basic behavioural values, in case they are expected to spend some time alone at home in the day.

9. Every time you plan to visit a crowded area like a fair or an amusement park with your children, make sure you identify a safe meeting place, so your child knows where to go in case you get separated.

It is important that you teach your child how to make safe choices in life. While they need to freedom to explore the world that is opening up to them, they must also be made aware of the potential dangers without scaring them. It is most important to maintain an open communication with your child to make sure he or she is on a safe path to growing up.
