Safety And Danger: Teens Texting
Most people have heard all kinds of horror stories about texting while driving
, but what far fewer people have heard about is teens texting and the dangers that it can cause. Teens today are so hooked on their wireless phones that some actually sleep with them! They spend so much of their time with their devices that it becomes like an addiction, and they move further away from their family members and their grades and schoolwork declines as their texting goes up. Not only that, but there are now many sources of evidence that suggest that texting, instant messaging, emailing and social networking is a grave cause for concerns over safety. In fact, there have been situations reported about teens texting being a life and death situation.The Pew Internet and American Life Project, which has just released its latest report on teenagers and cellular phones states some shocking news. Daily text messaging among teenagers in America has shot up in the past year and a half from 38% of teens texting daily to 54% doing it on a daily basis. These kids are responsible for sending enormous amounts of texts every day. Half of them send 50 or more out per day (this does not include the number they receive) and one third of them send more than 100 texts a day! This adds up to more than 3,000 texts per month! Where do they find the time to do this? Obviously a majority of their time is spent at school, and away from the eyes of parents. Older teen girls ages 14 17 lead with teens texting, and younger teen boys only average about 20 messages per day. Think about your own phone and how much you text is it 20 times per day?
Teens texting has become the main way that these children reach their friends, and they do it more than they talk face to face with those friends, too. Not only that, but they use their phone for these silent messages more than they use email, instant messaging and voice calling. The text message has become the daily communication tool for the kids in this age group. Interestingly enough though, these kids tend not to text their parents, voice calling is still the preferred method of communication when it comes to talking to their parents.
Teens texting has a lot of negative effects on a childs level of school work, their level of focus and the amount of content in school that they pay attention to. There are a few positive points to all of this though, and that is that they are communicating with their peers...unfortunately it seems that there are so many bad implications of teens texting that there is little compensation that is positive at all.
