Safe Driving Guidelines For Teens

Safe Driving Guidelines For Teens

Obtaining a driver's license is an exciting time for teenagers

, as it is one of their first steps toward adulthood. However, this step is often a scary moment for parents. Being behind the wheel of a vehicle has risks no matter what age you are, yet for young drivers with not a lot of experience, the risk can be much greater. Below, find several guidelines that teen drivers should keep in mind to ensure they get the proper experience while practicing the proper safety methods and techniques.

Before Driving:

Prior to getting on the road, teen drivers should take certain precautions to ensure that the car is safe to drive. Make sure that the car has had all the appropriate maintenance repairs and that there is enough gas to get to and from the destination. Adjusting the driver seat's position and headrest allows the driver to have safe, full access to the brake and accelerator, and also makes sure that the driver is comfortable and has proper support. Clean the windshield to avoid dirt blocking the view of the road. It's also important to know the location and directions to the destinations. Keep a map in the car just in case. And always buckle up!

Understand the Risks:

By understanding the risks involved when driving, teen drivers can take caution and prevent potential accidents from occurring. Drinking alcohol and driving, for example, is a huge risk that teenagers should avoid at all costs. Always make sure there is a designated driver when alcohol consumption is involved. The use of drugs can also impair one's judgment and reactions, and can be just as dangerous as drinking and driving. Teen drivers should also take caution when friends are in the car, as teen passengers can be a major distraction to the driver. Other distractions include cell phones and electronic devices. Do not use electronic devices to call or text while driving. Instead, stay focused on the road and remain fully alert.

Practice Makes Perfect:

Many teens may believe that just because they passed the driver's test, they are instantly experts on the road. Any experienced driver knows that is not the case. Driving skills are constantly being developed and improved with experience, no matter how old the driver. Young drivers should take each driving experience as a chance to learn and grow.

What Parents Should Do:

It is important for parents to be involved with their children's driving education rather than simply relying on classes and tests to teach their teens the rules of the road. The more driving experience teenagers are exposed to, the more they will learn. Communication is key. If you are a parent with a teen driver, be sure to discuss all the possible risks with your child. Set ground rules and firm consequences regarding drinking and driving, cell phone use and driving with friends. Make sure that your teenager's car is fully insured, and always remember to support your teen's growth and development by providing solid advice.
