Rotator Cuff Inflammation Treatments You Need to Know

Rotator cuff Inflammation occurs in the case of rotator cuff impingements such as shoulder bursitis or shoulder tendinitis. Inflammation can cause pain and hamper shoulder mobility. If left untreated, an inflamed rotator cuff can lead to serious injuries.

In the case of bursitis, the bursae, or tiny fluid filled sacs that form a protective lining between the shoulder bones and the tendons become sensitive and inflamed due to friction.

In the case of tendinitis, a tendon might be injured or torn. Decreasing the inflammation is the first thing that a doctor will try to do, even before the cause for inflammation is diagnosed. The first step is to avoid any movement that might aggravate the rotator cuff inflammation.

Rotator Cuff Inflammation Treatments

Anti-Inflammatory Medications - Inflammation can be treated with several anti-inflammatory medications. Some of them are Advil, Motrin, Celebrex, and Aleve among many others. All these are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Steroids - Steroids are not prescribed unless the inflammation cannot be controlled by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.

Ice - Ice can be applied on the rotator cuff inflammation and is known to be a helpful treatment. Ice numbs the area and helps to relieve the pain and stimulates blood flow in the injured area.

Physical Therapy - Physical therapy is the next step in the treatment of rotator cuff inflammation. These exercises help to both strengthen the rotator cuff and help stabilize shoulder movement. Physical therapy to reduce rotator cuff inflammation includes overhead weight lifting, throwing activities, stretches and isometric exercises.

Cortisone Steroids - If all these steps do not help the rotator cuff inflammation, cortisone steroids are injected into the inflammation site. Steroids usually bring down the inflammation.

Surgical Intervention - If the cause of the rotator cuff inflammation is a tear, that needs surgical intervention, then the steroids won't provide permanent relief.
