Prostate cancer is a common cancer which is found in the elderly men, where there is a cancerous overgrowth of the prostate, a small organ just below the opening of the bladder into the urethra. These cancers are like the cancers of the breast in women, are the overgrowth of the secretory of the organ and is often mistaken for or misdiagnosed as a benign increase in size. Prostatic cancer is a malignancy of the prostate gland, seen commonly in elderly men above the age of 50 years. It is often co-existent with its benign counterpart i.e. BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) and usually arises when the benign cells are transformed into malignant cells and start to multiply rapidly. The symptoms of these conditions can be as innocent looking as a simple urinary retention or even till frank obstruction of the bladder and invasion and adherence to the rectum and other surrounding tissues. Prostate cancer treatment commonly includes chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiation therapy, and of these the hormonal therapy of prostate cancer is a particularly sensitive issue to deal with as it involves the use of anti-androgenic (anti-male hormone) drugs which can cause side effects like proliferation of mammary tissue (gynecomastia) and other hormones which can cause change in secondary sexual characters of the person.
But with the advent of for alternative prostate cancer treatment the approach to treating prostatic cancer has changed greatly, changing the way the clinician and the patient approach the disease and also improving patient prognosis on a long term. Extensive studies to search for appropriate natural compounds which can cause the tumour cells to die spontaneously indicate a compound known as resveratrol is useful in the stoppage of tumour proliferation. Resveratrol is a chemical compound which is extracted from plants. This compound is said to have been produced by plants when they are being infected by any plant viruses as a response to the infection, akin to the acute phase proteins which are produced in the human body. Resveratrol is used in alternative prostate cancer treatment as a selectively apoptotic (an agent which causes the tumour cells to die spontaneously) to tumour cells thus causing apoptosis of the tumour cells. This drug is believe to act on the tumour cells to cause the aberrant folding of proteins produced which initiates cellular apoptosis pathways. Therefore alternative prostate cancer treatment is a promising upcoming treatment for prostate cancer.
Another upcoming therapy is the use of selenium and vitamin D3 in the prevention and the slowing down of cancer proliferation. Both Vitamin D3 and selenium are micro nutrients which are required in the body in small amounts for the effective functioning of the body. In addition to being a good anti-oxidant Vitamin D3 is a hormone like vitamin, which induces the growth of cells by increasing the rate of duplication of the DNA in the nucleus, and thus accelerating the growth and division of the cell. Selenium is another good source of anti-oxidants. The role of vitamin D3 in prostate cancer treatment though is not its ability to cause growth of cancer cells, but its efficacy in being an antioxidant where it mitigates the free radical mediated damage to the tissues of the body by the growth of the tumour.
Thus, with the coming of the newer methods of alternative prostate cancer treatment patients and doctors alike can look forward to a better and more holistic cure for cancer.
