downriver using an inflatable rubber dinghy and angling for mahseer in the Kameng. Angling season begins in early October right up to April. Though you can fish here throughout the year, the river is in full spate during the monsoons; this is also the spawning season for fish and you would do yourself and the fish a favour by avoiding angling during the monsoons. Rafting as an adventure sport is becoming increasingly popular in the area.
Sights
The Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the Bengal Tiger, the Great Pied Hornbill, deer and a whole lot of other animals and birds. You can also visit the Tipi Orchidarium that has over 2600 cultivated orchids of 80 different species. The Kaziranga National Park
lies to the south of Bhalukpong. It is one of the most famous reserves in India and was re-established in 1940. It is home to the one horned rhinoceros, one of the last creatures of prehistoric age. The Orchidarium at Tipi near the banks of the Bharali River is one of the largest orchids in the country. In the research centre here scientists create new hybrid varieties or orchids using the latest techniques of bio technology. You can spend time angling and rafting in this park.

You can also fly in to Tezpur and than drive up the 52 kms to Bhalukpong.
How to get there by Rail
The nearest railhead is at Rangapara at Tezpur. There are local taxis and buses that regularly ply the route.
How to get there by Bus
Most people prefer to drive the distance. NH 37 is in excellent condition and the road passes through the Kaziranga National Park. There are watch sheds at vantage points along the highway and you can see rhinos, elephants and other animals on the marsh lands a little distance off. The drive takes around 5 hours.
Best time to Visit
The Nyethidow festival celebrated by the Aka Tribe in March draws a lot of tourist and is a good time to visit. The weather is also cool around that time. October to April is the best time to visit Bhalukpong. The rains come in rather heavily in the monsoon and most tourists avoid that period.

Nameri National Park is 21 kms away from Bhalukpong and is a Tiger Reserve. It is home to a very large variety of wildlife and since it receives relatively lesser number of visitors as compared to other wildlife parks of the region, it is largely unspoilt.
