Online dating tips for men and women usually focus on the things people are doing wrong, rather than on what is right. People giving this advice sometimes automatically assume you might be a terrible candidate for online dating.
Most people have the potential if they are not already in a loving and long-term relationship to be super successful at online dating, if only they put in the amount of effort, time and trouble it takes to get there.
Perhaps if you have no access to the Internet for whatever reason, then you will not be very successful at online romance. That much is pretty obvious. Who fits this category?

But are there, in modern Western society and assuming availability and ease of cyber access, specific personality traits that would make a person terrible at online dating?
Is there just something about "you" that would make you a lousy Internet dater?
As we observed earlier, most people do have the capacity to make a good go of Internet romance. Those that cannot, or who try and fail, would perhaps be just as terrible at dating in the real world as they are via an online dating service.
Here are some things that you can do to make sure you are NOT terrible at Internet dating:
1. Be open to meeting lots of different people
If you are shy in the physical world, then cyber space actually opens up new vistas and opportunities for you. Look for other self-confessed shy people, and you will feel much less pressure to be someone or something you are not.
2. Do not limit your choice of potential partner
When you fill out the profile form, make it easier for yourself by not being too specific about the type of woman or man you want to meet. Don't say you only want to meet slim, red-headed vegetarians leave the field open for as many people to contact and respond to you as possible.
3. Do Your Research
Do some research about online dating services you want to join. If you have any doubts, read some forum posts to see what other members say. You can use other people's experiences to make sure you are not terrible at online dating.
4. Exercise Caution
While it is okay to be open-minded and accepting of all types, just bear in mind that there are a few people who join Internet dating websites who are not 100% ethical or honest. Take precautionary steps when meeting women or men for the first date. Don't be nave enough to go to their place of residence before you have first had a coffee at a crowded caf, for example.
