Reasons To Move To Preston, Lancashire

On the north bank of the River Ribble you will find the city of Preston

, Lancashire. What once started as a small market town is now largely an industrial one, and in 2002 was granted city status. The city has a population of just over 131,000.

Preston is strong on its Christian history and tradition. The city has a total of eight rural cival parishes and in the past has been called "most catholic city in England!" St Walburge's church is one of Preston's landmarks with a spire standing over 300ft - one of the tallest in England.

Preston is notable for its Georgian buildings, many of which can be found in Winckley Square - the town hall, St Wilfreds Catholic church and the Miller Arcade among them. The exposed chimney of the grade II listed Arcade is a reminder of the remarkable heritage of Preston. The mill itself is located in the Ashton-on-Ribble area, and has had extensive refurbishment. Since 2007 it has employed 800 people.

Ashton-on-Ribble is home to Preston docklands, which has undergone redevelopment in recent years. With many of the small businesses flourishing, retail is massively responsible for contributing to Preston?s economy. There are two main shopping centres within the city. The Fishergate Centre provides shoppers with large outlets of major retailers like Debenhams and Primark. St George?s shopping centre is a popular central mall, dating back to the 1960?s.

The Miller arcade is a specialist shopping centre in a listed building, which I think adds to the whole shopping experience! Preston's main high streets are Fishergate and Friargate, both of which offer shops, bars and restaurants, plus a few surprises hidden away in the side streets! I love hanging out in this part of Preston.

Preston has some of the best colleges and universities in England. Preston College, based on two campuses is best for A-levels and vocational courses and is a centre of vocational excellence. There are various Catholic high schools and colleges, some paying homage to Preston?s industrial past by specialising in business and enterprise.

The marina, formerly Preston Port has successfully expanded commercially and residentially since 1988. The Marina has its own chandlery, coffee shop, training courses and boat sales.

Preston is perfectly located for convenient travel, with the west coast main line running regular long distance to London and the south and direct services to Blackpool, Manchester and Liverpool. Direct Links to twelve UK cities including Carlisle, Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Also conveniently located is Blackpool International airport 20 miles west of the city and Manchester airport 40 miles south

Property prices in Preston, Lancashire are affordable. The average house price for a 3 bed semi-detached is 161,300. For the Ashton-on-Ribble area the average is 122,770 for a 3 bed town house, many having marina views and close to all local amenities. These and others can be found online and you can deal directly with the owner as they are free property listings.
