It felt as though everything getting green lit in the United States for quite some time was reality television. Mockumentaries are meant to appear as though they are shot like a real documentary. There is one camera, no applause, no laugh track, etc. It is shot seemingly around the clock, filming all of the characters interactions throughout the days. Occasionally an actor or actress will address the cameras directly. There are one of two ways for the actor to address the camera much like in a real documentary. One way is for the character to acknowledge the camera, usually in response to something that happened. In The Office this is frequently done with just a look and direct eye contact with the camera.
