For athletes, pain in the groin usually means an injury to muscles, ligaments or tendons in the vicinity where the legs connect to the hips. A "groin pull" is a relatively common sports injury that occurs when the muscles of the upper inner thigh (adductors) are overextended or stretched beyond their normal limits.
If you have a groin pull, you often recall when and how you got it. Pain in the groin area is the primary symptom, although some swelling may also take place .
Treatment for this type of pain is fairly simple: put some ice on it and rest. Compression can also be helpful, as is elevating the leg in which the injury has occurred. Any number of pain relievers, both over-the-counter and prescription, may be suggested by your medical professional .
In addition to an adductor injury, painful groin may be a symptom of some other kind of problem. Possibilities include the following.
Hernia - This occurs when part of the body slides through a tear or opening in a different part near it. This happens occasionally when part of the intestine bulges through a gap in the abdominal wall. A hernia can result in groin pain. Other indications of a hernia include swelling, nausea and vomiting.
Injuries to soft tissue - Muscles, ligaments and tendons in the abdomen can be injured or stretched beyond their limits. This is most likely to take place during vigorous exercise or playing sports.
Swollen lymph nodes in the groin area - When this occurs, it results in discomfort in the groin and can be a sign of a sexually transmitted disease.
Testicular cancer - This type of cancer has received a lot of attention in recent years because of Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Armstrong not only survived this kind of cancer, but he has become of the most successful and renowned athletes on the planet. This fact should not fool anyone into thinking, however, that testicular cancer is easy to cure.
Groin pain, lumps and swelling of the testicles may be symptoms of testicular cancer.
Referred pain - When a problem arises with the lower back, the pain may travel along nerve pathways to other areas, including the groin. Symptoms of referred pain from spinal conditions usually also include numbness, burning or stinging sensations, or a "pins and needles" feeling.
Kidney stones - Pain from kidney stones generally starts in the "flank" area, approximately midway down your back and slightly to either side. But kidney stone pain can also radiate down into the groin. If you're experiencing severe/stabbing/extreme pain in the mid-back which crosses down around to the abdomen and into the groin, it's probably because of a kidney stone.
Orchitis - this problem causes the testicles to become inflamed and painful. It is usually an infection due to either viruses or bacteria. Orchitis is a serious condition and it's important to receive medical care as soon as you can.
