Protecting Your Kids From A Gun That You Own

Protecting Your Kids From A Gun That You Own

It can be a hard decision for some parents to figure out whether owning a gun and

keeping it in the home when they have children is the right thing for them to do or not. When you consider that more gun issues concerning children are taking place at a seemingly more rapid pace, many parents just think it is not worth taking a chance with, while others still think a gun in the home is a smart thing to do. For some it might be perfectly acceptable and for others it really might not be a great idea.

Owning a gun is a right that is so far, guaranteed by our constitution and some parents have a gun because of that right. Others might have real valid reasons to have a gun in the home like living in a high risk area where there is a lot of crime. A single mother might not feel really safe alone in the home with her kids to protect without one. There are so many reasons why a gun could be helpful in the right situation, but keeping your kids safe with it in the home is the most important issue.

If you are set on owning a gun, then you have to know that where you keep it is extremely important. It is the key to safety for your kids. Most kids that are killed by a gun in the home end up dead or injured because it was the parent that carelessly or even deliberately left a gun where a child got access to it. You rarely hear of a child being hurt with a gun if it was locked away as they always should be. If you have ever for one second thought that you could trust your child to not touch a firearm just because you told them not too, then you evidently still have a lot to learn about raising children. Children can not reason as well as adults even though sometimes it might seem like some children do have more sense than some adults.

Your first priority is to keep your gun in a lock box. A safe that can not be removed is the best way. A wayward teenager has the capability of removing a locked box and getting the weapon out if they really wanted to. You never want to think a kid of your's would do something like that, but why risk it? Always keep the safety on your gun in place and keep it unloaded even when it is locked up.Protecting Your Kids From A Gun That You Own

Even if you decide not to have a gun in your own home, that is no guarantee that your kids will never be exposed to one somewhere else. Other families you don't know that well might not be as responsible as you would be and you have to prepare your kids for that. Hopefully, they will never be facing a gun in someone else's home, but they should know to immediately get away from it and not even think of touching it if they were to see one. At school is another place where the possibility of your kids seeing a gun is ever increasing. Teach them to report anyone at school with a gun no matter who they are for their safety as well as everyone else's.
