Protecting Children From Dog Attacks

Protecting Children From Dog Attacks

Children love dogs, but not all dogs love children

. While dogs can provide friendship and fierce loyalty to children, they can also attack without provocation. Children needed to be taught how to behave around aggressive dogs to protect themselves against unexpected attacks. Below are a few tips to teach children to help keep them safe from dog bite injuries:

Do not make direct eye contact with a strange dog, as it may perceive this as threatening behavior.

Dogs are extremely territorial. Be cautious when entering a yard, home or other area that dogs may consider their territory.

A dog will attack when it is startled. Make sure to make your presence known to the animal before approaching it. Let the dog sniff you before attempting to touch it.Protecting Children From Dog Attacks

Never chase a dog.

If a dog is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies, do not disturb it.

Dogs can be annoyed by loud, shrill sounds, so do not scream near them.

When two dogs come together, whether they are playing or fighting, do not go near them. Dogs may unintentionally injure you if it is engaging in aggressive behavior with another dog.

Before you approach any strange dog, ask permission from the animal's owner. Owners know whether or not their pets are friendly with children, and they will tell you if it is safe to pet their dogs.

If you are attacked by a dog, play dead by rolling into a ball and keeping still with your arms over your head and neck. This will prevent the dog from mauling your face or throat.

Canine aggressive behavior is demonstrated by snarling and baring its teeth. When a dog shows this kind of behavior, back away from it slowly.

Never approach a stray dog. If you see one, inform an adult immediately.

Do not think that just because a dog is wagging its tail that it is friendly. Instead, ask the dog's owner before approaching it.

When a dog is confined behind a fence or inside a car, or is tied or chained to a structure, do not approach the dog.

Children should only play with a dog if an adult is around to supervise.

Dogs can be friendly, but remember that they have animal instincts to protect themselves from perceived danger. And to protect themselves, they bite. Make sure your kids know how to stay safe around dogs in order to help prevent dog attacks and painful dog bite injuries. When animal attacks occur, however, it is advisable to consult with an experienced dog bite injury attorney to discuss your legal options.
