Prosthodontics Treatment

Prosthodontics primarily refers to the dental specialty which involves the diagnosis, effective treatment, rehabilitation and smooth maintenance of the oral function. It also deals with the appearance and betterment of the health of patients who are suffering from certain clinical conditions such as missing teeth or oral and maxillofacial tissues which make use of biocompatible substitutes. Prosthodontics is also commonly known as Dental prosthetics or Prosthetic dentistry and is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Prosthodontic treatment can be regarded as a multidisciplinary field which collectively involves oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, head and neck surgeons, speech therapists, and numerous other healthcare professionals.

Maxillofacial prosthetics is a sub-specialty of prosthodontics. Maxillofacial prosthodontists treat patients who have certain congenital defects of the head and neck region owing to cancer, surgery, trauma or birth defects. Some of the most common prostheses planned and developed by Maxillofacial Prosthodontists include Maxillary obturators, Speech-aid prosthesis and Mandibular-Resection prostheses. The different types of prostheses also include those related to artificial eyes, nose and various other facial prostheses developed in consultation with an anaplastologist.

The impression tray acts as a carrier for the material used to create and develop the mold of teeth and adjacent structures. There are different types of impression trays based on the size and shape of the jaw of patient.

A spatula is mainly used to mix impression materials. A wax spatula is usually used to handle the wax which is to be melted over the burner.

Two kinds of knives are mostly used in prosthodontics namely compound knife i.e. a knife which is used to trim modeling plastic, impression compound, and wax and secondly a plaster knife used for trimming products made of gypsum.

Prosthodontists use the crown remover to remove the crown from a tooth.

The Roach carver, which resembles the wax spatula, is mainly used to cut, smoothen and carve dental waxes.
