Poseidon: Champion Australian Race Horse

R H Dangar's Neotsfield Stud in NSW was one to create history with Poseidon, foaled in August 1903, moving on to become the greatest Australian Thoroughbred horses of all time.Poseidon was from the fifth crop of Positano, out of Jacinth, who was sold for 400 guineas to the Moses brothers as a foal at foot with his dam. However, the Moses brothers had no interest in Poseidon, who later sold him in 1905 to Sir Hugh Denison for 500 guineas, a sale they were sure to regret a year later. Trained by Isaac Earnshaw, Poseidon had a slow start to his career as a two-year-old with only one win and a third place from six starts. His first win came in his second start with an impressive four-length victory. The next stop was Melbourne, which did not do much for Poseidon's career at that point. It was back to Sydney, with a third placing in the AJC Nursery Handicap his best. Poseidon was sent out for a spell. However, with Tom Clayton in the saddle, perseverance paid off big time with the trio becoming one of the most successful in Australian horse racing history. Poseidon's exemplary career as a three-year-old in the 1906/07 season ended in sharp contrast to his first season with 11 wins and three second places from 14 starts. The trio started with a bang with two wins in minor races, which was the beginning of a glorious year as the stallion continued to blaze the tracks. Racing with older competition in the AJC Metropolitan Handicap, Poseidon finished second to Solution, a New Zealand Thoroughbred. First in a string of wins in Melbourne was the VATC Eclipse Stakes which he won in record time, followed by the Caulfield Cup once again breaking records. Then came the VRC Victoria Derby and the VRC Melbourne Cup. There was no looking back when Poseidon returned in the autumn after a spell to bag the VATC St. Helier Stakes, VRC St. Leger Stakes, and the VRC Loch Plate. Poseidon gave way to Dividend in the three mile VRC Champion Stakes, and then moved on to Sydney to win the AJC St. Leger, before losing again to Dividend in the AJC Cumberland Stakes. Poseidon had already accomplished a lot for his connections with 12,000 in prize money as a three-year-old and an impressive 11 wins from 14 starts. Poseidon started the season as a four-year-old with a third place in the Rawson Stakes. However, the stallion was back to his winning ways in the 12-furlong WFA AJC Spring Stakes at Randwick, beating stable mate Apologue, and then knocking back to third in the AJC Craven Plate. In a warm up to the Caulfield Cup, Poseidon took the WFA VATC Eclipse Stakes, a week before on 16 October 1907. Jockey Tom Clayton rode an amazing race in the Caulfield Cup, staying put for half a mile before breaking clear to make Poseidon the first horse to win consecutive Caulfield Cup. Poseidon obliged punters in the VRC Melbourne Stakes with a fine win over Apologue. Winning the Caulfield Cup added another 10 lb penalty for the Melbourne Cup, where 65 kgs. proved too much for the stallion who ended up in eighth place. A leg injury in 1908 was a minor setback for the trio, who then moved on to Sydney to win three out of four starts. Poseidon finished the season with seven wins, one second place, and two third spots from 12 races. A leg injury shortened Poseidon's racing career as a five-year-old, with a fifth place in the RRC Rawson Stakes after which he was retired to stud duties at the 'Eurmeralla Stud' at Gulgong, NSW. Undoubtedly, some of the best horses he sired were principal race winners. Poseidon died on 3 February 1930, but his memory lives on with the Listed VRC Poseidon Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings run in his honour and a rightful place as an inductee in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2004. Poseidon's unbeatable still stands - a record which made Chinese market gardener and punter, Jimmy Poon, a wealthy man, who backed Poseidon in every win, but surprisingly didn't wager with any bookmaker on any of his defeats.
