It's important to remember that celebrities are people. The only difference between them and you is notoriety. The person you're dressing can't take out the trash without being scrutinized, and in some ways that makes them just as nervous around you as you are around them.
This is also the reason they are overly conscience of their appearance. Common folk have the luxury of schlepping to the grocery store in their pajamas and Ugg boots. A celebrity must always look his or her best.
Let's not forget that a celebrity's appearance is his or her bread and butter. The right image can make the difference between obtaining their next starring role, or losing it to that hot new Hollywood starlet. A celebrity must always look better than their competition.
When you're training to be a fashion stylist, these are things you cannot be taught. This type of street knowledge comes from working around famous people. You'll soon grow more comfortable in their presence, and you'll be able to speak to them as you would any person on the street.
Be aware that your client lives their life under a microscope, and understand that every choice you make must measure up to, or surpass, the public's expectations. Be sympathetic and respect their personal space.
The Diva Attitude
All of this pressure will make even the sweetest person a nightmare to work for. Having high standards can often be mistaken for having a diva attitude. Realize that there's nothing wrong with having exceptional expectations.
Celebrities have large incomes and money talks. Almost anything can be found and purchased for a price, which can set up an environment in which the word "no" does not exist.
If your client wants that rare item that has not been released to the public yet, as a competent celebrity stylist you should be able to find it. This skill will be the result of research, relentless determination and your relationships within the fashion world.
You must exhaust every known resource in your search for those obscure products. You have to be willing to travel to the ends of the earth, working long hours to achieve the unachievable. Most importantly, you have to have insider connections which will grant you access to anything your client could possibly desire.
A diva is only a diva when they don't get what they want. Do your best to ensure that you never have to say no, and if you absolutely can't find something, don't come back empty-handed. Offer alternatives and sell them as better than the item you couldn't find.
Be Psychic
It sounds harder than it is, but it really comes down to listening and anticipating. If you listen to your star and remember how they react in certain situations you'll develop a sixth sense. You'll begin to see the world through their eyes.
When you're shopping for them you'll immediately know, he'll love this. She'll go crazy for that, and you'll soon become the celebrity stylist that A-listers keep on speed dial!
