Though plastic surgery has been around for thousands of years
, it is still a consistently changing and evolving field - it is interesting to watch how its focus shifts over time. Two main factors seem to influence its direction: technical skill, and popularity. If the surgeons know how to perform a procedure and the celebrities decide that they want it done, then it's going to become popular - whether it takes time or it happens overnight.
Plastic surgery operations in general have been becoming more and more popular in modern times, both for men and for women. While procedures for both men and women are increasing steadily, it seems to really be heavily weighted towards female growth. Only more recently are we seeing a lot more men considering and undergoing cosmetic surgery - both non-surgical and surgical. With men, the latest trends in procedures include botox, lipo, facelifts, chin implants, and calf implants as well.
As soon as they get home from the hospital, we hear all about the latest "job" a star had done. Many of our celebrities model a very casual attitude towards plastic surgery, and lately we see this reflected in the general public more and more. It's not unusual for people to follow the way of our popular stars, and we see evidence of taht trend in plastic surgery too.
The trendiest operations that women had in 2007 included breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and breast reduction. The data that the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery collected in 2011 is almost the same. The most popular procedures for women in 2011 were breast augmentation, liposuction, abdominoplasty, breast lifts, and eyelid surgery. Among men it was liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, and facelift. The most common procedures for the age group 35-50 consisted of botulinum toxin type A (botox), hyaluronic acid, laser hair removal, IPL laser treatment, and microdermabrasion.
Botox and other non-surgical operations have had the greatest increase in popularity in recent years. In 2011 the five most common non-surgical procedures included botox, hyaluronic acid, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, and IPL laser treatment. Nearly identical to the five most popular from the age 30-50 group but the order is a little different.
Surgical and non-surgical operations have grown almost 200% in the past 15 years and now number more than 9 million per year! While only 14% of men said that they would "consider" plastic surgery, 91% of the operations were performed on women. But overall the approval of society for plastic surgery work is higher than ever, and as the technical skills evolve and procedures become more popular - with our celebrities leading the way - we will only see these patterns become more and more trendy.
