, this island is named after South Wales' first governor Arthur Philip. Its area is approximated to be ten thousand hectares, and it is also twenty six kilometers long besides being nine kilometers wide. A town in the island, Newhaven, is connected to another mainland town, San Remo, by a six hundred and forty kilometer concrete bridge. Two years later during the same event, the bridge connecting to the mainland broke after the third run owing to the fact that it could not support the heavy hotmix bitumen that had been used to construct the tracks.
The circuit was closed in the nineteen seventies, before being re-developed and then being re-opened in nineteen eighty nine when it was used as the venue for the first international version of an Australian Motorcycle Grand prix. A strange happening took place on the island on the tenth of August when snow was observed as that was something which had never been seen on Phillip Island before.
