Even before the season started, the Green Bay Packers were heralded as a team that had Super Bowl potential
. In contrast, the Philadelphia Eagles were taking a new direction after parting ways with longtime quarterback Donovan McNabb. In the end, the Packers did walk away with the 27-20 win, but it wasn't without a fight. The Eagles also revealed their depth, as they continued to put pressure on the Packers despite a slew of injuries during the game.Following the game, the Eagles lost two names for the entire season, placing fullback Leonard Weaver and center Jamaal Jackson on injured reserve. Both suffered injuries against the Packers. Last season, Weaver was a Pro Bowl selection after a standout season with the Eagles. Weaver joined the league as an undrafted free agent signed by the Seattle Seahawks. He was a standout tight end in college, but the Seahawks moved him to fullback and Weaver thrived in the role. His 2006 season was cut short because of a high ankle sprain, but he was back to his old self for the 2007 season. Weaver's injury consisted of an ACL tear in his right knee. Owen Schmitt will now be the starting fullback.
Jackson was also an undrafted free agent, and the Philadelphia Eagles signed him in 2003. He spent his first two seasons as a backup before earning his way to eight starts in the 2005 season. Since 2005, he has started all but one regular season game. Jackson suffered a tear to his right triceps and will have surgery. Jackson is coming off of an ACL tear that he incurred at the end of the 2009 season. Mike McGlynn now has the starting center spot.
With the two open roster spots, the Eagles signed fullback Owen Schmitt and tight end/fullback Garrett Mills. Schmitt has played with the Seattle Seahawks for the past two seasons, tallying 32 rushing yards, 50 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. Garrett Mills started his NFL career in 2006 with the New England Patriots. He then played with the Minnesota Vikings from 2007 to 2009.
Season ending injuries weren't the only ones the Eagles were dealing with after Week One. Linebacker Stewart Bradley suffered a concussion during the game but later returned. The team's starting quarterback Kevin Kolb also had a concussion during the game. Kolb returned to the game for one series and then sat out the rest of the match. During his time in the game, Kolb was five of 10 for no touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 56.2. He was also sacked twice.
Kolb's injury opened the door for backup quarterback Michael Vick, who was previously the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons before his highly-publicized incarceration for bankrolling a dog-fighting operation. Vick looked to be back in top form, going 16 of 24 for one touchdown, no interceptions and a passer rating of 101.9. He also had 11 rushing attempts for 103 yards. His performance inevitably sparked a debate among those with Philadelphia Eagles tickets about who should be the starting quarterback, but it appears that the Eagles are sticking with Kolb so far.
