, a lead author of Lonely Planet Peru, to get some inside stories on life as a guide book writer and fill us in on some must-see highlights for a Peru vacation.There are so many places that you can visit in Peru. You can check out Cusco, the Land of the Incas. You can visit Puno and Lake Titicaca, Choquequirao Peru, Nazca Lines and the Royal Tombs of Sipan. The Kuelap Fortress, Manu National Park, Paracas National Reserve, and Colca Canyon in Arequipa might interest you.Throughout July on the run-up to the holiday, the red and white national flag becomes a ubiquitous sight, while immediately before the holiday public parks and plazas across the country become stages for impromptu performances of criolla folkloric musical performances.Begin with a walk along the cliff-top malecon in Miraflores and head to the romantic Parque de Amor (Park of Love) which offers views over the Pacific Ocean and picturesque Goudi-style mosaics. Stopping off at one of the numerous small art galleries, head towards the Amano Museum for an insight into Peru's indigenous civilizations or the galleries at Trapecio for some modern art.The fortress itself occupies an enormous surface area, over one kilometer long and rivaling the size of almost all other ancient structures in the Americas. At 3000 meters above sea-level, the fortress was once an enormous symbol of power that dominated the Utcubamba Valley.The events are focused around Plaza Grau, on La Punta, a peninsula that juts out into the Pacific Ocean which is home to a pleasant neighborhood of original architecture and beachfront shops, restaurants and attractive, well conserved parkland.
The iron Yavari steamship was originally purchased by the Peruvian Navy in the 19th century, from a British shipbuilders in Birmingham. The ship was sailed across the Atlantic to a Peruvian port before being disassembled into thousands of pieces and hauled by mule across the Andes to Lake Titicaca at almost 4000 meters above sea level.Before heading to bed, take a look around Puno's vast number of tour operators for a trip out onto the lake the following day. International Peru vacation package providers will also offer these excursions.Heading back into town, those with a strong constitution can try a glass of the local tipple, chicha, which is created by chewing and spitting corn kernels into vats for fermentation. Chicha is available from rustic outlets, usually someone's kitchen, look out for a red flag at the front door and be prepared for lots of inquisitive attention from the locals!
If you can't wait, have a late lunch in Pisac or else catch a direct bus back to Cusco, which should take around one hour. Settle back in to your Cusco hotel and relax after your two day adventure in the Sacred Valley!Many local folkloric tales add to the site's sense of mystery, known locally as "Purgatory" from the Spanish attempt to convert indigenous people to Christianity by constructing fires atop the mounds and claiming it to be purgatory itself.
