Peer Pressure Moves Some Teens To Liposuction
Adolescence can be an awkward and uncomfortable time
. A person's body always seems to be changing. It's either too fat or too gangly, too flat or too round. There always seems to be something wrong with it. It of course doesn't help matters that peer pressure is arguably at its strongest and most brutal during the teenage years.Just about everyone remembers a time when they felt unaccepted and cast out during high school or junior high. Just about everyone can remember a time when they were made fun of because of their appearance. However, most of us were simply told to try to live healthily and to be patient and wait for our bodies to develop. And that tended to be what we did. After all, there wasn't much other choice, was there?
Well, it seems that for some teens today, there is another choice, and it's cosmetic surgery. Teenagers form a small but present percentage of the cosmetic surgeries performed in America. The percentage of American teens getting cosmetic surgery has remained relatively constant. However, given that the total number of American cosmetic surgeries has gone up, this means that an increasing number of American teens are undergoing surgerise such as liposuction.
In some other parts of the world, cosmetic surgery percentages are similarly being shown to grow. Cosmetic surgery clinics in India have found that the number of teenagers undergoing surgery has increased. Perhaps tellingly, even more than the increased in actual surgeries, there has been a much larger increase in inquiries by teens. Even if not all of them get the surgery, more and more teens are looking at and actively considering cosmetic surgery.
One doctor explains the increased interest in this way: "Looking good is the quickest way to get approval from people. Hence, it is not just the desire to look good that makes them take drastic steps, but what the good looks might get them."
Another doctor opines: "Today's teens are far more familiar with cosmetic surgery than any previous generation. They have money, exposure and want to stand out from the crowd."
While cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction may be intensely interesting to teens, parents should help their teens to be cautious. It can be a dangerous thing to place one's emotional stability and self-image on a cosmetic procedure, and teens frequently lack the emotional maturity to make appropriate choices. Parents should help their children to develop healthy habits, to develop proper self-esteem. If cosmetic surgery is decided on, the parents should definitely be an active and caring part of the decision making process.
