Parenting ADHD - Getting The Facts And Then Deciding What Is Right For Your Child

It is fascinating to get a glimpse of the latest Consumer Reports on ADHD, especially on parenting ADHD. About 70% of parents found that the medications were effective and when answering another question, less than half the parents (44%) said they wished there was another way of treating ADHD.

The scope of this article is to look at parenting ADHD and especially the reactions of those 900 parents who took part in the Consumer Reports survey.

First, about a third of the parents found that having structure and routine in the home certainly made a difference. Having an ADHD friendly home definitely helps, it seems.

But what about behavior? That is a burning issue for parenting ADHD. They were mostly happy with the effect of medications on the children's academic performance and behavior at school. That means simply that there was better attention span and children were less hyperactive. But when it came to behavior at home and social relationships, the statistics tell quite a different story.

They were not impressed with medications helping with behavior problems at home and about 25% complained that indeed pills do not teach skills. This of course bears out the findings by William Pelham at The Center for Children and Families at the University at Buffalo. He has long maintained that unless there is a some sort of behavior modification or simple effective parenting skills in place, the effects of any medication will be of little value.

Obviously with one in two parents wishing for some more effective treatment, there are some questions to be asked. It seems that too many parents are simply relying on medications only. These effects wear off after only about three years, according to William Pelham.

That leaves a terrible vacuum and that is why there is a definite move away from the conventional meds (Ritalin, Concerta and Vyvanse) to more natural remedies. There is also a growing awareness that successful parenting of ADHD must be now heavily reliant on child behavior modification techniques.
