Panel Judge Stands Down From Confusing Bahamas Wedding Competition

The terms and conditions of a dream wedding competition launched in the Bahamas have caused confusion amongst entrants and judges.

The competition (currently running) gives couples the chance to win one of 16 weddings abroad in the Bahamas which will take place at the same time next year on each of the nations 16 main islands.

The conditions of the competition states that it is open to residents of the United Kingdom aged 18 and over, who are legally entitled to enter into marital/civil partnership in the UK and in The Bahamas.

Another term states: It is not Bahamas Government policy to provide marriage licenses for same sex couples and therefore same sex marriages cannot be performed.Panel Judge Stands Down From Confusing Bahamas Wedding Competition

These conditions were questioned when someone asked why the civil partnerships eligibility clause had been included, because Bahamian law does not allow for these either.

The Bahamas Tourist Office clarified the confusion by explaining that the clause refers to a non-religious marriage ceremony, not a civil partnership.

However, this discrimination against same-sex destination weddings in the Bahamas led to one judge stepping down from her role in the competition.

Ruth Benford, the Marketing Director for Goldsmiths jewellers, decided to stand down after learning about the rules for gay couples. Goldsmiths, who were sponsoring the competition, stated that the company did not want to be seen to support an event that excludes gay and lesbian couples.

The competition is part of a new marketing and publicity campaign for The Bahamas and the 16 winners will receive luxury weddings abroad on the nations main 16 islands with all ceremonies scheduled to take place simultaneously on 16th May 2012 at 4pm.

The tourist board is hoping that the 16 individual Bahamas weddings will help raise awareness of some of the lesser-known Bahamian islands, including the Berry Islands, Crooked Island Mayaguana, and Acklins.

The winning couples will win a grand prize that includes a designer dress, rings, wedding ceremony, flights and transfers, seven nights accommodation and meals, and six nights' accommodation and meals for two wedding guests per winning couple.

Couples planning on getting married abroad in a gorgeous beachside Caribbean location can enter the competition online at bahamas16weddings.co.uk. They must choose one of the islands in The Bahamas and submit a short video clip or photograph with a statement explaining why that island would be perfect for their special day.
