Overcoming A Child's Terrible Two's Stage
When a kid is just a baby he is like an angel
, but when he turns two, he seems to behave in the contrary. He often has tantrums and wants things done his way. This is a stage of development called as terrible twos. At this point in time, the child enjoys his ultimate freedom without thinking about its limitations.Kids see their parents as their first teachers. This means that they learn everything in life from them including the limitation of freedom. It may be hard yet understanding the said development stage arms you with good defense against terrible twos.
During this stage, discipline is necessary. You can discipline your child by making him lie down for several minutes and also taking his things and toys when he throws it away while having tantrums. By doing these things, you can help your child learn that everything in life has its consequences and every bad action he does won't be tolerated. After giving your child some punishment, talk to him calmly and explain to him what's wrong with what he did and the reason why he has been punished.
Being inconsistent with your punishments will confuse the child and will just make the disciplining ineffective hence repeating the punishment every time the child commits mistake is needed. This may be hard to do but this will make the child realize the he shouldn't do it again.
It can be considered one of the most humiliating situations for parents when their child will not obey them in public. In order to minimize such situation to occur, appropriate behavior should be taught to the child inside the house. Learning process may not that fast but it is still worth the wait.
In handling terrible twos, discipline is not the only thing that's needed. Terrible twos is the stage where the kids want to test his freedom and you can allow him to have it during proper times. One way to let him have a grasp of his freedom is to allow him to brush his teeth even if you are already done doing that and allowing him to set up shows by himself. Activities such as playing at the park can also help the child have a taste of freedom.
When your child does something good, remember to congratulate and appreciate him. Give him reward for behaving properly. This will help him understand what's good and bad.
Remember that although terrible twos is just a part of development and will simply pass, you still have to guide and teach your child on this stage. When you help your child learn right and wrong, you can be certain that he can manage his life on his own when he grows up.
