The prospect of being able to order goods at any time, and let someone else do all the hard work involved in packaging them, and then sending them out, clearly appeals to anyone who can use such a service. And individuals and businesses alike are getting into the habit of this convenient way of ordering and receiving goods, with an equivalent of 111 for every person in the UK being spent on goods ordered online in December, according to the Interactive Media in Retail Group's Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

This brought the total amount spent online on goods which were later delivered by a UK courier to 58.8billion in the whole of last year. The heavy snowfall which blanketed the country in early December was thought to be responsible for much of the growth, as people forewent trips to their local high street or big shopping centre, in favour of sitting at home in comfort, and ordering everything they needed online.

Clothes, footwear and accessories were the fastest growing sectors in the online retail market in 2010, and of course, these are items which people are used to having to carry back with them from their shopping trips. The idea of being able to give their arms and legs a rest, and instead let someone else carry the burden, is clearly catching on, especially when shoppers can browse at leisure through the virtual stores of many of their favourite online retailers or brands and find everything they need.

Of course, another major benefit of going online for major items is that it takes much less effort to compare the prices of the same goods on offer from different retailers. Many online sellers even promise to beat the price of an equivalent product on sale with any of their rivals, so although it might take a little work, it can really pay off in terms of getting the best possible deal.

And of course, the middlemen' in all this online activity are the UK and international couriers who have the job of ensuring that all these extra items which are being ordered over the internet arrive at their destinations safely. With all this extra activity in online shopping to cater for, they are being kept busier than ever and getting the chance to impress even more potential customers who will one day, no doubt, need to send a parcel of their own.

Shoppers can get the best of all worlds when they buy online, because they can choose to have their goods brought to them by a cheap courier who might even be able to offer a next day delivery service for a competitive price.
