Online Poker Vs 3 Card Brag - Hot Vs Not?

Online Poker Vs 3 Card Brag - Hot Vs Not?

3 Card Brag has been around for a lot longer than poker

, but for some reason, brag has only just made it to the online tables. Poker commands a huge proportion of the online gaming market share, and as it reigns King of the tables it's going to need a lot hutzpah to really get noticed. And even when it is noticed, is anyone going to sit up and pay attention?

So what's the big deal, why does poker reign supreme? In reality the games are very similar, although not identical. If you can play poker, you can play brag, it is the definition of comparing like with like. Bridge for example is an entirely different concept, but, if you have a good strategy for poker, then there's no reason that you couldn't make the crossover to brag.

The problem with brag is probably that culturally, it is firmly rooted in England (although it is a very popular game on the Indian Subcontinent under different names). When you think of poker, what image comes to mind? Probably something along the lines of wily and ruggedly handsome men playing for high stakes, surrounded by foxy ladies - an image that might not hold truth, but certainly one that permeates the collective media conscience.

Now, lets do the same with brag, what comes to mind? Probably a dark dingy corner of an English pub, with a stained table surrounded by wonky toothed old men in flat caps playing for pennies while their greyhound dogs gently snooze at their feet, only to be interrupted when one of the old geezers farts. Again, not the truth, but we have Mike Myers' Austin Powers and David Bowie to thank for the world's perception of English teeth among other things. It's an vision that is going to find it hard to compete against poker's.

The image took a slight upgrade due to 'Lock Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels' the Guy Ritchie film that portrayed the game as a bit more hard edged. A bit more 'Gangsta'. It is telling however that for the follow-up film 'Snatch', Guy Ritchie drafted in an American, Brad Pitt, to give the film a bit more marketability, a move that worked well. Furthermore, it has to be noted that Guy Ritchie, and Snatch's Jason Statham have since moved statside, and are now doing very well indeed. So, what does all this have to do with poker and brag?

It could move in one of two ways - nowhere, and somewhere. It could be regarded as a 'quirky but pointless' variation of poker, "poker ain't broke, so why fix it" and we're not just talking about the US here, as remember, where Americans go, many follow. There is however, the 'anglophile' nature of US culture that may latch on to something English, but is the land of the free and home of the brave ready to let go of its roots? Is the ten gallon hat unsightly mustache going to be replaced by the cloth cap and untrimmed eyebrows - unlikely!

A potential for the game may lie in a gaming response to US cultural dominance. The French have banned english words as a way of combating what they see as an invasive culture. Could 3 Card Brag become the new 'Arab Cola' as a response to the U.S.'s cultural dominance? The problem with that thesis is that three card brag is primarily seen as a British Game, and being that both the US and the UK speak English they are both too similar for other nations not to see them as very close cousins.

So it is unlikely that brag will enter the fray and come out smiling on cultural grounds. The game's novelty may however give it an 'in'. Poker players are in their nature 'adventurers' to some extent. We are talking 'thrill seekers' here, who obviously don't complain about winning hands, but that's not the only reason that they play. Brag may offer a new frontier to conquer, using familiar tools - 3 card, psychological insight, and well practiced strategy.

If brag is to break into the online gaming market with any real degree of success, the brokers will have to do something really smart to grab the punters' attention. Poker is the enemy here, so how about using the enemy?

There's big money involved in online gaming, and occasionally placing a wild bet pays off, and is worth the risk. How about getting Phil Ivey and some other poker greats together for a game of brag, and spreading the word, it's a long shot, but it just might work.
