The Power of Staying Alert

Alertness is the highest conscious state a human being can ever attain. In this supreme state of realization the mind cuts through the barrier of reasoning and endless thought activity and for the first time its able to discriminate between a thought, the feelings associated with the thought, and the present moment. The mind becomes the observer and the world of thoughts becomes the observed.

Alertness shouldnt be confused with focus, which is a mind activity that lets you place your mind exclusively on the object of your desire. Focus is all about concentration. Alertness is more powerful and superior than focus. When youre alert you can watch and observe where you focus your mind. Alertness gives you the combined power of concentration and keen observation.

Alertness isnt a mind activity. When youre alert thoughts no longer occupy your mind. Your mind is free, having released itself from the continuous stream of thoughts. The free mind is agile, powerful, full of strength and vigor. It no longer considers it necessary to discriminate between virtue and vice, between past and future, and between cause and effect. Rather it desires only one thing - the ability to discriminate between the real and unreal, between the preferable and the pleasurable.

The ability to stay alert is the greatest secret weapon of achieving serenity and wisdom.
