While online schools offer students the opportunity to complete an entire degree program online, a growing number of ground schools are allowing students to take online courses for credit in addition to their on-campus classes. Students enroll in online courses for a number of reasons such as convenience, busy schedules, and even the possibility of completing a degree program faster.
University of Iowa sophomore Kate Stoffer is one such student who takes online courses in addition to the classes that she takes on-campus. Last summer, Stoffer completed and received credit for two online courses while she was away on a church mission trip. Online courses help students work toward achieving their degree in situations like these, where a traditional classroom setting is not possible.
Craig Lang of the Iowa state Board of Regents thinks that online courses are of great value and that they have the potential to benefit students and taxpayers alike. Online courses save schools money, and when taken in addition to a student's normal schedule, they "can actually enhance the learning ability of the student" by allowing students to manage their time better.
Like many other full-time students, Stoffer also has a part-time job which can create a challenge when scheduling courses or completing assignments according to strict deadlines. One of the main benefits of online courses is that enrolled students are able to work at their own pace. Traditional classes that meet at specific times each week are often not as flexible. Students who take online courses are generally able to earn more credits each semester and are often able to graduate faster. Online summer courses have become increasingly popular as well for students who return home or travel during the summer months.
