There are different systems in place with each online course that is online, but most combine reading lists with online discussions in which students can post their comments in a forum.

That allows students to conduct this work on their own time, including the evenings or weekends if they are already working full time. That is in vast contrast to in person courses that don't give students the option of too much flexibility, but rather lay out a schedule of required courses that must be attended. Another convenience factor that online colleges are able to give their students is that they are able to learn at their own pace. In a mixed study setting, some students learn in different ways, so all are not able to excel at their own rate. Another way that costs are cut with online lectures or degrees is that they can be taken part-time, rather than forcing any student to be bound to a strict schedule. These are all various factors to consider when comparing the options of universities, be they online or traditional.
