. Spanish public holidays are basically religious in nature. Spain is a predominantly Roman Catholic nation with numerous festivals and pageantry, held in both large and small cities at different times.

The day marked Good Friday is an important day in the spring. Throughout Holy Week, and Good Friday, which is the Friday before Easter Sunday, is the time when cities engage in a lot of large pageantry with festivals. In the main these are pageants that re-enactment the crucifixion. Then on Easter Sunday Spain has another holiday. Easter Sunday commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus.

In the late spring or early summer, Corpus Christi is held, celebrating what the the failthful believe to be body of Christ. In fact, the name Corpus Christi translates as just that. The feast or festival is celebrated on the first Sunday after Trinity Sunday is the Feast of Corpus Christi. The feast, and spanish culture, celebrated on a different day each year, focuses on the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. There are pageants and church celebrations on this day. This varies each year, but is typically in May or June.

The Feast of St. John's is celebrated in June 24 each year. In the evening of June 23, the Spanish set bonfires and enthusiastically burn effigies. Excited Spaniards jump over the bonfires. They believe if they jump across the fire three times, it will cleanse them of sin or cure disease. Different districts have a variety of traditions and festivals celebrating this day. Autumn and Winter Holidays in Spain The autumn and winter months continue to see parades and festivals of a religious nature. On October 12, Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. It is also known as Spain's National Holiday that is also called Hispanic Day. November 1st, is All Saints Day. This is a Catholic holiday honoring all the Saints and Martyrs. The holiday first began in the fourth century. There is a play, Don Juan Tenorio and it is often performed before an audience on All Saints Day. Major offerings to the church are made on this day. Then December 6, is Constitution Day. Voters approved the constitution in a referendum on December 6, 1978. This is also an important national holiday that celebrates Spain's transition to democracy.

Around Christmas, the most celebrated day in Spain is January 6. This often called 'Little Christmas' but in Europe this day is often a larger celebration than December 25. It is also the Epiphany, celebrating the wise men coming to Bethlehem and to the infant Jesus. January 6 is also called El Dia de los Reyes or the Day of the Kings. In the Spanish tradition, the three kings represented Arabia, Africa, and Europe, arriving with gifts for Jesus. There are large pageants and parades with festivals in numerous towns to celebrate this holiday.
