No Mold Allowed! A Fun Bible Object Lesson for Your Kids

If you want to gross your kids out, show them some mold or mildew that has grown on some food. It's disgusting! It can also be very damaging to anything it touches. Who would ever eat moldy bread? Mold and mildew have also been known to destroy whole crops. Haggai 2:17 says this: "I sent blight and mildew and hail to destroy everything you worked so hard to produce. Even so, you refused to return to me, says the Lord." This verse is showing a very serious side to God that our children need to know about. God wants us to protect our spiritual lives and not let the bad things of the world destroy our growth in Him. Here is a fun Bible object lesson to teach your kids this important truth.

Here's what you do:

The object you will use for this lesson will be a fresh piece of bread and a moldy piece of bread. (If you aren't sure how to grow mold on some bread, Google: "How to grow mold on bread" to learn how.) Place each slice of bread on it's own plate for the children to be able to see.No Mold Allowed! – A Fun Bible Object Lesson for Your Kids

Ask the following questions to help stimulate discussion:

1. What do I have on this plate? (Show the fresh piece of bread. Wait for response.) Who would like to have a taste of this bread? (Give the children a piece if they'd like.)

2. What do I have on this plate? (Show the plate with the moldy bread. Wait for responses.) Who would like to have a taste of this bread? (Place it front of the kids. You will get lots of of "yucks!")

3. Why don't any of you want to eat the moldy bread? (Wait for responses.)

4. Mold destroys the bread and makes it worthless to eat.

5. Have a child read Haggai 2:17.

6. Say the following: This Bible verse says that God sent hail and mildew to destroy all the crops that the people had worked so hard to plant. Why did He do that? Let's learn a little more about this Bible verse and how it teaches us to live our lives for God. Here are 3 important points about this truth.

Point 1: Did you know that a farmer's crops could be destroyed by hail and disease and mildew? Unfortunately, it's true. Sometimes the damage can be very bad.

Point 2: Your life is like a field of crops. Except the crops of your field aren't fruits or vegetables. Your crops are prayer, reading the Bible and going to church. God wants you to take care of your field. Don't let pride or laziness creep in like a disease and destroy your prayer time. Don't let your hearts grow cold and shriveled up with the mildew of not caring about God's Word.

Point 3: The people in our Bible verse began not to care about God and He had to discipline and show them that it is a serious thing to follow and love God. Don't ever neglect your spiritual life. Ask God to watch over your field. Let Him teach you how to take care of your life and how to stay away from dangers that want to destroy you.

This 3-Point Bible Object Lesson for Kids was inspired by my reading of C.H. Spurgeon's devotional on Haggai 2:17 from his book Morning and Evening. You too can be inspired by your favorite Christian authors and come up with your own 3-Point Sermon for Kids.
