This book is the essential guide for serious collectors and casual charm. "Charms and charm bracelets The Complete Guide" is a hardcover book published by Schiffer in 2005. The author, Joan Schwartz, and the photographer, Robert N. Schwartz has done a brilliant job of packaging the book with charm bracelet history covering the 19th century to the present. They also discuss the choices, styles, and current values, and include over 300 stunning color photographs of bracelets and pendants.
On the inside cover jacket is a brief biography of Joan Schwartz. The first paragraph reads: "Schwartz is an avid collector of antique jewelry and vintage His personal library includes more than 100 catalogs of vintage jewelry, and she is a member of the Society for Historians of Links London ..."
From his vast knowledge and the library has compiled this comprehensive and entertaining guide that was my first "must have" reference from the jewelry, and remains my personal favorite. Reading through the table of contents provides an overview of the richness of the information contained on the pages that follow.
The first part examines the performance of vintage charms also the materials used, manufacturing processes, and embellishments. The second part tells the story from the early 1900 when Castile and cases to see become bracelets, until the 1960's and beyond. The third part takes a look at the special categories of attractions, such as Stanhope, hearts, travel memories, and those moving mechanical parts. And fourth, my favorite is the charm catalog, which is loaded with many more "drool" photos of some first-class charm collections. There are also several appendices in the back that help identify the perpetrators and types of charms.
The technical advisor for the book was Joan Munkcsi. She also provided many examples of his beautiful bracelet extensive personal library to be used in the photographs in the book. Joan sadly died last year, but his legacy lives on for collectors of Links Of London Charms through their contributions to this book, and in the discussion group founded eBay vintage boutique.
I think this book is a collection in itself, equally suitable for a sample of coffee table and a research guide. You want to have a separate copy for research, because although I assure you it will seem very used pages within a short period of time. It is considered by many to be the charm of collectors 'bible' and is a great resource for jewelry collectors worldwide.
