New Wave Fashion: Retrospective Of French Film Fashion

Each of the major British newspapers this morning are cheering the fiftieth anniversary of Jean-Luc Godard's new-wave classic film A Bout de Souffle (Breathless), which is celebrating its fiftieth birthday this week. For women's fashion this is obviously a prime area for a bit of style research, as we're reminded with the accompanying rush of stills of Jean Seberg, the film's lead woman probably best known for her cries of "New York Herald Tribune" on the streets of Paris. The cropped blonde hair, the adorable striped tops and that black halter-neck with its overlapping lozenge design all these got me thinking about fashion in the height of French cinema cool. So here's a run-down of the other New Wave style monuments, and how to go about recreating them: Chantal Goya (Madeleine): The star of Godard's 1960 masterpiece Masculin Fminin delivers aloof French style with complete effortlessness. First of all there has to be the French bob or its equivalent to do the hard work. To begin with there's the pseudo-cute blouses with the thick white collar, given a touch of chic with a neckerchief. For the skirt we want something a-line and pleated, just below the knee, and worn with knee-high socks (note the poster-girl look of her singing career) with pumps. A deceptively sweet look, as those who've seen the film will know. Anna Karina (Odile): The huge fluttering eyes of Anna Karina, the heroine of Godard's Bande Part, captivated the audience in her role as the luckless Odile. However the outfits worn by Karina in the film are a perfect example of that sixties French style so exasperatingly difficult to pin down. For the brilliant dance scene in the caf which most people will remember, the outfit is a tartan-patterned skirt, black leggings and a dark woollen jumper, plain, but well-cut and by no means baggy. The classroom scene is also worthy of note for the slim-fitting jersey/camisole, and black ribbons in the hair. Delphine Seyrig (La Femme): Taking a moment away from Godard, the phantom belle of Alain Resnais's masterpiece Last Year at Marienbad allows us to come to the other end of the fashion spectrum, from unconcerned hip through to stylized grandeur. There are few who could not fall in love with the sumptuous outfits of Seyrig's 'La Femme', and the outfit which delights beyond all others is the evening dress. Take a sculpted, tulip-like cocktail dress, roughly falling at knee-height. Add to this a gauzy, webbed black shawl or wrap strung over the shoulders. Some heavy pearly earrings and a pair of black heels and you are approaching the most haunting heroine of French cinema to date.
