Nubra Valley is about 150 km north of Leh, the capital town of Ladakh, India. Its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The Nubra valley geographically separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La pass if approached from Leh. Traveling to Nubra valley require an Inner Line Permit which can be easily obtained in Leh town.

In ancient age the old famous trade, silk trade route passed through nubra valley and it has the footfalls of different traders involved in silk trade.

If you see from Khardung La (5,359m), the highest motorable pass in the world, you can see the Nubra Valley with the towering Sasser Peaks On the north and On the south it is the Indus Valley.The first village on the Nubra side is Khardung. The next village is Khalsar, which is the confluence of Nubra and Shayok.From Khalsar there are two roads the first follows the Nubra River to Panamik and the other follows the Shayok to the villages of Hundar and Diskit.The first route stertched all the way from India to Central Asia. The last indian village on that route is Panamik . After Panamik, the road crossed the Karakoram and Kun-Lu ranges and went straight into Central Asia. The Nubra valley is wide and is surrounded by barren mountains on all sides and there's a little bit of cultivation on both sides of the river only.

Diskit, which is the headquarters of Nubra sub-division and a small town, has all basic facilities including a number of good hotels. Hot springs in the outskirts of Panamik, Ensa Gompa (over 250 years old monestry),Samtanling Gompa is another famous Buddhist religious place, located at the Sumur Village are other point of attractions in Nubra Valley.

Getting there: Leh is connected by air from Delhi, Chandigarh, Jammu and Srinagar. It is also connected by road from Manali.

Best Time to Visit: Summer, May to August. Although one can observe topographical diversities in the climate of the valley, the atmosphere is warmer than that of Leh.

Permits: Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit to visit Nubra. Hotels in Leh can arrange for permits as well as vehicles.
