New Studies Question Assertions That Fish Oil Cures Prostate Cancer
Is it possible to ward off many of our worst diseases today by eating a diet rich
in omega-3 fatty acids; some experts and medical scientists are starting to believe that this is indeed the case. It could be that fish oil cures prostate cancer and other forms of cancer and we are just beginning to realize these benefits. As an example of the research, according to the American Association for Cancer Research, fish oil supplements consumed over a six-year period produced a 32% reduction in the chance of getting breast cancer. Furthermore, the journal Clinical Cancer Research found in a 2009 study that if you ate a diet rich in omega-3, you also had a much lower chance of getting the most aggressive form of prostate cancer.
Furthermore, the Journal of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics (easy for you to say!) found that fish oil helps to reduce cancer by reducing inflammation in the prostate gland, as published in a report released in 2009. We know that one of the principal benefits of consuming a diet rich in fish oil or fish oil supplements is to help combat inflammation. Chronic inflammation causes cellular aging, which can lead to a variety of our most progressive and damaging diseases and conditions. Inflammation is still understated in the medical world and its contribution to our poor levels of health not yet fully understood.
The American Heart Association has been for some years recommending that we consume Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil, to help ward off cardiovascular disease. When we turn to cancer, we know according to the Clinical Cancer Research study of almost 1000 men who were observed over a number of years, that those who ate the most Omega 3 fatty acids in their diet had by far the lowest risk of contracting the most severe type of genetically linked prostate cancer.
For those unfortunate enough to have been already diagnosed with this dangerous condition, omega 3 fatty acids could help to make a difference. The journal Urology, found in a separate study that those who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer exhibited some beneficial changes in the composition of tissue samples taken from the prostate, following an uptake in dietary omega 3 fatty acids.
There have now been a number of important studies surrounding the benefits of omega 3 dietary intake when it comes to the scourge of prostate cancer. A Harvard Medical School study in 2007 found a 41% reduction in risk for men who concentrated on their fish oil intake versus those who didn't. The Clinical Cancer Research study in 2009 indicated a 63% lower risk of being diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer for men who ate one or more servings of fatty fish per week.
While we may not yet be able to say assertively that fish oil cures prostate cancer, we can see a clear benefit for those who ensure that they get the necessary, high-quality intake of omega 3 fatty acids on a daily basis. Considering all the other potential health benefits, adoption seems pure common sense.
