Nainital situated in the Kumaon region of the Uttaranchal state is the most famous tourist spot in India

. Also called the 'Lake District' of India its beauty is beyond comparison and descriptions. Scenic beauty and non-diminishing impeccable landscapes have been the center of attraction of tourists from all over the world. God crafted this earth and embedded it with gems and jewels; one of them is the town of Nainital. At a height of 1939 feet it is surrounded by snow covered peaks.

Mr. P. Barron a European merchant founded this place in 1814. There are many myths related to Nainital which marks the importance of this place in history of this world. According to Hindu mythology this place was earlier known as Tririshi or The lake of three sages Atri, Pulastya And Pulaya. During there pilgrimage they wanted to find a place without water and here they dug a hole and soon due to there power of Tapasya.

Another legend narrates that when the unfortunate event of shakti (Incarnation of goddess Durga) burnt herself in fury due to insult of her consort Lord Shiva. Lord took her burnt corpse in anger and 51 pieces of the corpse fell on earth, later which came to be known as Shakti Peeths. It is said that the Naini lake its greenish waters are the reflection of her eyes. Thus it is known as Naini Lake which is the most famous lake in Nainital. Magnificently placed by the nature are lakes in Nainital. Boating in these lakes is a lifetime experience. Horse riding in the lush green lands of this town gives an altogether rocking feeling.

Naina peak at an altitude of 2615 ft provides visitors with a 360 degree view of the city. Eagle's eye view of the green city is one of the most pleasant experiences one can feel. A walk on the paths carved on the peak avails all with a view of snow clad mountains of the Himalayan range as well as the Tibet border can also be sighted from there. Fresh air and dense forests of deodar trees are at offerings at the peak. Thandi sadak or The Cold Road is meant for people who like stroll around admiring nature and the scenic beauty. The chirping of the birds from the forests nearby, the sound of wind blowing through tress and the calmness of the place; all combine together to strike the chord of love in our minds. The sound of the nature is observed while walking through fog and the view acts as lyrics making it a perfect combination. Mall road which runs through the heart, one can walk on the street for hours visiting shops and capturing the beauty in there heart.

Culture of this region is unique as in Nainital there are folk dances for every season. Phooldeyi or Phooldeli is celebrated in the months of March-April; when young girls put the first flower of the season on the entrances of there house which signifies good luck throughout the year. Hariyala celebrated during July-August fills people with joy as they welcome Rainy season and worship Lord Shiva. During these months the decorated bullock carts are worth watching which find a rest on the streets and at important locations of the city. The produce of the land after year long hard work is celebrated during Bhado or Middle August part of the year. It is believed that walnuts sweeten after this festival and is reason for joy amongst the townsfolk.

Very few places are there on this earth which high light beauty of the nature and craftsmanship of god, Nainital fills your soul with eternal happiness. The founder of this district said "It is by far the best site I have witnessed in the course of a 1500 mile track of The Himalayas". A place which will remain in your memories whenever you will think of beauty is Nainital.
