Mzima Springs in Kenya
Mzima springs are located in Tsavo National Park in Kenya and it's a major tourist attraction site to the area
. The springs are located to west side of the park. The source of the springs is from a natural resvoir in the Chyulu Hills that sit on the northern part of the park. In the hill there is volcanic lava rock that is too porous to allow rivers to pass through and instead rain water that has collected for over many years pass underground to the springs.Mzima Springs is a natural well whose water covers a journey of 50 kilometers before getting to the destinations. Through this journey the water undergoes a lot of filtration giving an end product of very clean stream that flows through a series of pools. The amazing thing is that two kilometers downstream from the springs, the stream is blocked by a solidified lava flow and then disappears below the surface again. The springs are home to the Nile crocodiles and hippos. The hippos graze around the surrounding savannah by day and return to pools in the evening.
Mzima springs have also rose to fame through being popularized by a famous film maker named Alan and Joan Roots in their 1999 nature documentary named Mzima: Portait of a Spring which featured the life of the hippos and crocodiles in the area. Another documentary named Mzima: Haunt of the Riverhorse produced in 2003 also shode light to life of hippo in the springs. There is a lot of vegetation in the area and fruit trees like date, raffia palms, waterberrys and figs that grow beside the water.
