Myth And Legend Come To Life At Macaus A-ma Festival

Macau is a global playground for entertainment

, leisure and an all round good time with its calendar dominated with such highly anticipated events as the Macau International Marathon, The Macau International Music Festival and the Macau Grand Prix. But most visitors remain unaware of the countrys cultural events which include the Dragon Boat festival, Ching Ming festival, Feast of Maidens, Feast of the Hungry Ghosts, the Winter Solstice and the mid-autumn festival. Steeped in superstition, legend and myth, the A-Ma festival however reserves a special place in the hearts and minds of locals and visitors alike.

The A-Ma festival is so bound to Macaus historic legacy that is it even said that its very name is intertwined with the deitys. In fact, the name Macau is believed to be an abbreviated version of the term A-Ma-Gao which means the Bay of A-Ma while the island nations connection with the goddess is further established by the statue of A- Ma which stands at the highest summit in Coloane Island.

Legend states that a group of seafaring folk encountered hostile waters while travelling along the South China Sea until a beautiful maiden pacified the elements with a command and thus saved the lives of those on board. A temple was then constructed on the location where she landed in the inner harbor of Macau and this benevolent deity has been seen as the protector of the islands fishing community ever since.

Also identified as Tin Hau, the A- Ma festival centers around paying homage to the goddess, who is seen as a savior and benefactor of the fisherfolk in Macau. The festival falls on the 23rd of March each year and is marked by devotees flocking to the temple built in her honour to lay offerings and give thanks. Special Chinese opera performances in tribute of the deity are also commonly visible during this time of the year as she has dominated the nations culture and imagination since that fateful day when she rescued her would-be devotees.Myth And Legend Come To Life At Macaus A-ma Festival
