Beijing

As any casual observer will tell you, Beijing offers an incredibly rich history which makes for a spectacular introduction to any tour of China. For many the sprawling presence of the Forbidden City with its towering gates, imposing walls and incredible architecture marks the start and, often the highlight of, any China tour.

Tiananmen Square is as imposing a space as one can imagine, it sheer size will draw your breath as will the attractions and sights which it serves. These include the Temple of Heaven which is a relic of the once dominant Ming Dynasty and era. The Temple's unique architecture and surrounding galleries all make for a fascinating tour and, of course, wonderful photo! Perfectly located just outside of the city walls you will find the Great Wall of China which cuts its way through the scrubland and hills just north of the capital city. However, there is a quieter side to life in Beijing, and one which is too often overlooked. There are many gardens, including the city's famed botanical gardens, in which you can relax and explore at you leisure. As with many public spaces in China you can watch the city's inhabitants partake in some Tai Chi or just relax and soak up the atmosphere. Other less grand adventures await a jaunt through the city's hutongs and back streets offer a great insight into the more traditional and historical side of Beijing living. As such a visit to the hutongs are a must for any traveller with more than 48hrs to spare.

In the evening why not take a walk through the famous silk markets, take in the national opera or scour the streets to find an eatery to match your culinary mood!

Chengdu

As Sichuan Province's capital city, modern Chengdu will give a great mix of modern living and tradition, with a historical back drop stretching back 2,500 years. Such depth is history has left the city resplendent with dated buildings and a rich culture that sits alongside some lovely scenery. Chengdu is also home to the Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre. Not only is this a great chance to see the endangered specials up close but it also a fantastic opportunity to see the work being carried out to preserve the animals and their natural habitat.

Guilin

By Chinese standards this small city that is often quoted as being one of China's most resplendent and attractive. Walking through the city is a delight in itself. Dotted with charming limestone casks and bountiful numbers if Osmanthus trees the city is a place where the guidebook can be left alone and walking and wandering can take over!Must visit cities for any tour of China

The Li River is a fantastic sight and is often more popular with people who have previously undertaken a China tour. It carves its way through beautiful mountain scenery and the local life along its banks is a joy to watch in itself and through the evening the riverside night markets make for a delightful evening. River life also throws up some mouth watering local cuisine.

Xian

As capital of Shaanxi province, Xian offers the visitor an impressive history dating back almost 3,100 years and is recognised as one of four ancient capitals' of China. With ancient civilisation sites such as Banpo (home to ancient Neolithic settlements), it's position on the renowned Silk Road trade route and the world famous Terracotta Warriors it is the perfect destination for those wishing to delve deeper into Chinese history. Other historical attractions that do not make it into some guidebooks or itineraries are the Big Goose Pagoda (7th century) and the city's robust city walls.

Dining is Xian is also a delight and often the highlight of any China tour. There is a vast array of eateries to cater all tastes (as well as some Western establishments) and the food is certainly unique with an incredible blend of middle eastern and traditional Chinese cuisine. We always recommend you try the guotie', which is a unique and mightily flavoursome fried dumpling. Finally, if shopping is on the mind then try Artist's Street or the Muslim quarter to quench that commercial thirst.
