Brigham Young and San Diego State are included in the top 10 of both major polls. Both squads are in a position to play their way into a favorable seed and set up a nice path for the coming NCAA Tournament. UNLV, which hosts this tournament on a yearly basis, is also destined for the Big Dance after finishing the year on a positive streak. The rebels are usually good playing on their home floor.
The rest of the participants (seeds four through nine) are playing for a chance to secure the Mountain West Conference's automatic berth by winning the tournament. With the overall strength of the league this calendar year, one can say that at least five squads have the opportunity to win the conference tourney.
While BYU, SDSU and UNLV have seeding to play for, Colorado State and New Mexico (the fourth and fifth seeds on these events) are two teams who must win the tournament in order to reach the NCAAs. The Rams and Lobos have tried it this season with a few punches, while Colorado State beats UNLV on the road and New Mexico sweeps BYU. On the other hand, both squads have dropped games to lesser opponents and allowed their chances at an at-large berth to fly out the window. It is now time for Colorado State and New Mexico to show what they have under their sleeves if they want to get a ticket to the NCAA tournament.
The public eyes will definitely be fixed upon the two top seeds, BYU and San Diego State. The Cougars left the Aztecs to dust by double-digit margins during both regular season meetings. Those two results marked the team's only two losses throughout the season. San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher would desire nothing more than to get another opportunity to battle the Cougars. Yes, BYU is, of course, the top seed again in Las Vegas. Despite that fact, BYU has been the top seed in three of the past four tournaments but ultimately failed to win the tournament in all those years.
Another reason why March Madness betting experts say that BYU is weak on the boards is because of the suspension of Davies. Both San Diego State and UNLV can take advantage of this weakness and win a slow-paced slugfest against the Cougars. Pick the San Diego State-UNLV semifinal winner over BYU in Saturday's championship game, because UNLV will be playing home court and take the Rebels over the trophy.
