Mount Teide for a Holiday Villa in Spain

Tenerife should not come in second place as far as destinations are concerned when considering HOLIDAY VILLAS IN SPAIN although Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, comes second to Rio de Janeiro when it comes to hosting the biggest festival in the world. Another second is Spain's most visited attraction, Mount Teide (in Spanish "Pico del Teide") a live volcano that last erupted in 1909. It receives a large number of international visitors every year, second only to Mount Fuji, and since 2010 has become the most visited national park in Europe. In Spain, Mount Teide is considered one of the 12 national treasures although it has been designated as a Decade Volcano because of its proximity to a population. With a distinctive bulge on its northern flank Teide is considered to be unstable although not considered to be part of an influx of magma.

Articles saying that Teide is extinct have simply not been researched enough. Teide is dormant but the bulge, although not an influx of magma, is more likely the result of slow northwards collapse of the interior. Seismic activity registered during 2003 and volcanoes like Mount St Helens and Soufriere Hills both had similar seismic activity before becoming active. At the summit of the volcano there are a number of small active fumaroles emitting sulphur dioxide and low levels of hydrogen sulphide. In the middle of May 2004 there were five successive low intensity earthquakes between Mount Teide and Santiago del Teide.

The lifespan of a volcano can be many months or millions of years. If there are no written records of activity, a scientist would consider the volcano extinct. Before September 2006 when Fourpeak Mountain in Alaska erupted, that particular volcano was considered extinct as it had not erupted since before 8000 BC. The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior would not have felt it worthwhile placing Mount Teide on Decade Volcanoes list if it's an extinct volcano. No one at this time can honestly say that Mount Teide will erupt and if it does where and when. It is part of the Las Canadas caldera which also includes Pico Viejo and Montana Blanca.

There is a choice of a cable car or walking when visiting Mount Teide. The cable car carries tourists to the summit where there are breathtaking views of Gran Canaria, La Palma and El Hierro on a clear day. 2,400 metres up the side of Mount Tiede is the Teide Observatory used to search the night sky. It was opened in 1964 and quickly became one of the leading international observatories where many different countries were encouraged to bring their telescopes because of the excellent astronomical seeing conditions. The Parque Nacional de las Canadas del Teide was declared a national park in 1954. The crater which forms the floor of the park and Mount Teide rises from is 48 kilometres in circumference. Mount Teide stands 3,718 meters high and is the biggest mountain in Spain. Take courage in the thought that your HOLIDAY VILLAS IN SPAIN will be a safe destination for a holiday in Spain for a long time to come.
