The lifespan of a volcano can be many months or millions of years. If there are no written records of activity, a scientist would consider the volcano extinct. Before September 2006 when Fourpeak Mountain in Alaska erupted, that particular volcano was considered extinct as it had not erupted since before 8000 BC. The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior would not have felt it worthwhile placing Mount Teide on Decade Volcanoes list if it's an extinct volcano. No one at this time can honestly say that Mount Teide will erupt and if it does where and when. It is part of the Las Canadas caldera which also includes Pico Viejo and Montana Blanca.
