This is really ironic considering that motorcycle owners can benefit tremendously from insurers, and of course insurers make millions of pounds each year because of motorcyclists.Fortunately, things have started changing in recent years, in that most insurance providers are now welcoming those who choose to fly about on two wheels. Apart from the fact you're not allowed to ride a motorbike in the UK unless you have bike insurance, anyone in their right mind wouldn't want to do so anyway. After all, you don't need to be a rocket scientist in order to understand just how dangerous a motorcycle can be.
The vast majority of motorists always tend to blame motorcyclists for being reckless, but the truth is, there are many motorists who simply don't give a hoot about someone on a motorcycle. Every day you see cars pulling out in front of oncoming motorbikes, and little do they realise how much danger they're putting the motorcyclists in? When you're on two wheels you have virtually no protection at all, apart from your clothing and your helmet, should you be involved in a collision.
Let's face it, most motorcycles which are involved in an accident are usually damaged beyond repair. Insurance companies know all too well that motorbike accidents usually result in replacements rather than repairs, hence the reason why bike insurance can be quite a costly affair.
This is particularly true when it comes to big bikes, although it's also worth bearing in mind that some big motorbike are cheaper to insure than others. For example, sports bikes usually cost more to insure than touring bikes. This is not always the case however, because much also depends on the make of bike. After all, some touring bikes costs significantly more than some sports bikes, so of course these would cost more to insure simply because they would cost the insurance company more if they get stolen or damaged.
Another reason why insurance providers are wary when it comes to motorbikes is because bikes are a lot easier to steal than what cars are. In fact bikes are twice as likely to get stolen, and according to statistics, very few of them are ever recovered. This is why insurers are willing to offer discounts to motorcycle owners if they keep their bikes locked away securely when they're not being used. The more difficult you make it for thieves, the lower your rates will be.
Finally, if your premiums are still too high, even after you've tried everything, you could ask for the excess amount to be set slightly higher. Bear in mind however that the excess amount is the amount you have to pay before the bike insurance company pays anything, so of course it's best not to have it raised too much.
