Motorbike Insurance - A Necessity Not A Luxury

Motorbike Insurance - A Necessity Not A Luxury

Let's face it the day you first got behind the wheel of a car is probably one

of the best memories you have, but in my opinion it doesn't even come close to the feeling you get when you first get on a motorcycle. While some people refer to motorcycles as being 'death on two wheels', riding a motorbike is probably one of the most exhilarating experiences in the world.

Nobody in their right mind will deny the fact that motorcycles can be extremely dangerous, but with that said, much depends on the attitude of the owner. Act recklessly, and of course you're probably going to kill yourself eventually, but if you ride responsibly, you can expect to have a lifetime of enjoyment.

As is the case with cars, one also cannot ride a motorbike on any public road in the UK unless you have bike insurance. Not only is insurance compulsory, but it's also necessary because you can never be absolutely certain that you'll never be involved in an accident. Even if you aren't ever unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, there's a strong possibility that your dream machine could get stolen.

Unlike in the past, practically all insurance companies are now able to offer motorcyclists a range of insurance products. The very basic level of cover is known as 'third party, fire and theft'. As the name implies, this type of insurance package would cover your motorbike against fire damage and theft. It would also cover any damage caused to the property of a third party. On the opposite end of the scale you get what is known as 'fully comprehensive cover'. While this is certainly the most expensive type of cover, it also provides you with the highest level of protection.

Irrespective of what type of bike insurance you opt for, there are several steps you can take in order to keep the cost of cover down, and if you've not yet purchased your motorbike, then the ball is well and truly in your court. If that's the case, then the first thing you need to acknowledge is that you'd do well to steer clear of high performance bikes. These are super fast machines, and as a result, insurance companies see them as being high risk. Bike insurance will cost you a lot less if you limit yourself to one of the smaller machines, particularly if this is the first time you're going to be getting on a motorbike.

Motorbike theft is a huge problem in the UK, and it's something which costs insurance companies millions of pounds each year. Before you go out and buy your bike, think about where you intend parking it when you're not using it. Insurance companies will always offer you reduced rates if you can satisfy them that your bike will be kept under lock and key.

Unless you intend using your motorbike everyday, you may want to consider discussing limited mileage discounts with your insurance company. Doing so could result in you saving a significant amount of money, but you need to bear in mind that if you exceed the agreed mileage limit, you are required to contact your insurance company in order to let them know, in which case you're rates will be adjusted accordingly.

Motorbikes are an expensive commodity, and riding one can be a dangerous activity. This is something you need to keep in mind when you begin shopping around for insurance, because at the end of the day, you shouldn't focus entirely on price alone. Instead, you need a motorbike insurance policy which is not only affordable, but one which is capable of providing you with all the protection you need.
