This is one of the most popular events in the Filipino calendar which brings together hundreds of people who follow the teachings of Christ both local and foreign. The festival starts on the Holy Monday of every year and ends on Easter Sunday which falls in the month of March according to the biblical calendar. The island of Marinduque is where the colorful Moriones Festival takes place bringing the entire island alive and attracting thousands to its splendid shores.
The story of the Roman centurion known by the name of Longinus is re-enacted during the course of this festival. Legend has it that Longinus was blind in one eye and was one of the centurions present at the foot of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. It is also said that Longinus inflicted a wound on Jesus body with the use of his spear which bled severely. While standing at the foot of the cross a drop of blood which came out of this wound had fallen on his eye and had miraculously cured his ailment. Longinus is then said to have converted to believing the teachings of Christ.
