Modern Slave Trade

Casting our minds back to the 18th century, the age-long slave trade both trans-Sahara and trans-Atlantic which have been abolished after the pronouncement of a court in London have been permeating the fabrics of Africa again, most especially Nigeria. Despite the reasons of the Afrocentrics and Eurocentric scholars to put a stop to this man's inhumanity to man, slavery still remain a menace. From an eagle's eye, the uproar of slavery again in this 21st century is caused by people within this country and less pronounced outside the shores of this great nation.

In realism we are the people we are the people enslaving ourselves. This is evident in the numeric increase in the labour force leaving Nigeria in pursuit of so-called;"Greener Pasture". They voluntarily offer to do jobs in which they cannot do back here in Nigeria. Many wash closets, corpse, do petty jobs and come back to Nigeria to lavish and squander their sweat wages. They are always of the opinion that over there is paradise but at long run, their hope is thwarted.

A rider to the mass shift from Nigeria to abroad is the issue of "Visa Lottery" which I consider has leaving certainty for uncertainty. You see youth with ordinary high school result trooping out to contribute their meager stipend to enrich and ameliorate the poverty of hungry lads. Those that scale through the hazardous procedure and at last got the Visa have "Had I Known" stories to tell. Many roam the streets of Canada, U.S.A, Australia and U.K in an attempt to find the locus of their life.

Consequently, Europe has now became the "Land of No Return" as the case is in Badagry in 1500.It's a pity our ladies are entrap in this terrible, horrible and highly catastrophic situation where they serve as harlots. Before initiation, they are promised a lot of things but immediately they land on the soil of Europe, they have no will again. This is common among destitute, orphans and less privileged who have no one to care for them. To disclaim further exposition, we hold the larger blame in bringing up slavery again. Shall we sit down and watch while the Europeans again subjugate the conquest of our brothers and sisters?

Slavery has now taken a frontier among the we Africans in general again. This is characterized by our mode of dressing. An average Nigerian or African may have no native wear in his/her wardrope. This is a cause for thoughtfulness. Imported goods sell fast at the expense of our locally made ones. Hence you hear business men and women saying" Made in Italy" etcetera in order to catch the multitude bereaved of ideas. The soonest we realize that we are the architect of our problem, the better for us. How long do we remain under the yoke of our oppressors even after independence?
