It's that time of year again and teams around the league have to start deciding
whether they're pushing all their chips to the center of the table or folding to recover for next season. Let's take a look at the teams that are on the fence as of July 28.Boston Red Sox: Buyer
For the first time in a long time, it's not an easy decision for Boston's front office. Sitting seven games back of the monstrosity that is the New York Yankees and five games back of the talented Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox have been beat up by injuries over the season, and it shows. Their only real trade pieces with expiring contracts - Victor Martinez and Adrian Beltre - are players that the Red Sox absolutely need to make a run at the postseason.
Because of this, General Manager Theo Epstein very well could turn the Red Sox into a seller and if it was any other team he probably already would have. However, the Red Sox faithful demand a lot from their team and being five games out of the Wild Card isn't likely to be enough for them to shut it down. They need a bat and if they can get one the Red Sox have to seriously consider it. The question is whether or not there is one available.
Minnesota Twins: Buyer
It's the first year in a beautiful new ballpark and the Twins need to make another statement that they are committed to 2010. They don't have the payroll to bring in a guy like Roy Oswalt, but trading for a starting pitcher like Ted Lily could be enough to topple the Chicago White Sox and win the division. Sitting just one game back in the A.L. Central with Justin Morneau on his way back to the team and Joe Mauer starting to heat up, this one is a no-brainer.
Detroit Tigers: Seller
Sitting just four games behind division-leading Chicago, this is a tough one, particularly with a masher like Miguel Cabrera in the middle of the lineup helping sell MLB tickets. The problem for the Tigers, however, is the same thing that the Red Sox are dealing with right now. Decimated by key injuries, the Tigers don't seem to have enough left in the tank to overcome both the Twins and White Sox, even if they do go out and get another bat or an arm. The Tigers still have a nice group of talented players who have plenty of years ahead of them. It might be time to sit this one out.
Philadelphia Phillies: Buyer
After being touted as one of the best teams in the history of the National League before the season, the Phillies better make the playoffs, pure and simple. With them finally playing well after the All-Star break, the Phillies are in good position to make a run at the Braves but still need another starting pitcher. After all, relying on Father Time, or Jamie Moyer, to come back from injury to bolster their staff just sounds like suicide. Even though their offense has been struggling, they probably need to ship out Jayson Werth to have a shot.
New York Mets: Seller
Even if they fill one of their holes, of which there are many, the Mets still don't seem to have enough to beat out both the Phillies and the Braves. It's not easy to be the other baseball team in New York, particularly when you have to make calls like this, but it might be time to fold a losing hand and try to gear up for next season.
Colorado Rockies: Seller
Considering the Rockies have played pretty well this season and are two games above .500, this is not an easy call. In most other divisions, the Rockies could make the case for being buyers. Unfortunately for them, the N.L. West has as many quality teams as the A.L. East with the Dodgers, the Giants and the Padres all being eight games over .500 or better. Unless Sandy Koufax circa 1963 is available, it's time to start thinking about next season.
