The area continued to modernise throughout the centuries, its proximity to London meaning that it was part of the route of many roads, canals and railway tracks. This infrastructure was important to the development of Milton Keynes, but it wasnt until the 1960s that plans were formed to create a new town in North Buckinghamshire as overspill housing for London. The town was designed to be the biggest new town in the South of England at the time, with a projected population of 250,000 people. The decision was made to place the new town in a spot within easy travelling distance between London, Birmingham, Leicester, Cambridge and Oxford. The name Milton Keynes was taken from an existing village on the proposed site.
