Millions Of Americans Affected By Hearing Impairment
A medical condition left this female executive deaf in one ear
, causing her to hear mumbles from time to time. When it seemed like all she could hear were mutters from everyone, she decided to finally go for help. The mouth lip reading program of the Central Institute for the Deaf was where she enrolled, making her one of its first enrollees. The program is aimed at older executives who are leading more active lives while coping with age related hearing loss.As you get older, you lose your ability to make out the words that others are saying, says an audiologist helping out with the lip reading program. Preventive maintenance was the primary reason for why the lady executive enrolled in the program. Being able to communicate through spoken language is important in most careers. Only four students at most are in a class and the class would usually last for an hour a week in a span of four weeks.
Videos are shown to those attending the class so that they improve on their lip reading skills. They try to decipher sentences mouthed by an expressionless woman. Some do whatever she does on the screen to figure out the words. Sentence rephrases and one word clues are made available to those who can't understand what is being mouthed. These are effective strategies in lip reading.
Presbycusis happens because the inner ear is not able to translate particular sounds. The first sounds that people lose hearing of are the high pitched sounds. Typically, they will start turning up the TV, and they'll complain that people are mumbling. A hearing aid can help amplify sounds, but it doesn't necessarily help people with presbycusis, she said.
Trouble becomes more apparent in settings that have background noise. Isolation and depression start to take over their lives.
A noisier society continues to grow. The ambient noise that we're exposed to is causing more significant hearing loss, and hearing loss is showing up at an earlier age. Now the number one disability in the United States, hearing impairment affects about 28 million Americans. Permanent hearing impairment affects about a quarter of the adults aged 66 and above.
Through the word of mouth program, the institute wants to help people have a second chance at more fulfilling lives. Training in focused communication has brought out feelings of being younger and sharper in people. Lip reading skills ought to be practiced among participants of the program even among their family, friends, and colleagues. There are those who keep the TV muted while they watch.
They're not going to become great lip readers in four weeks. The difficulty of lip reading will encourage them to seek other different methods that would help them with their hearing loss. Hearing improvement strategies are given during the second half of the class.
For instance, an executive can call seminar organizers and ask to be seated at the front. The reason behind the reservation will remain unknown. Weekend sessions and more accomodations are in the list of hopes of these institutes.
