Mijas, The Top Family Holiday To The Costa Del Sol

Mijas, The Top Family Holiday To The Costa Del Sol

Mijas is one of the favorite destinations for families and people visiting the Costa Del Sol

. Situated between Malaga and Marbella up in the foothills of the Sierras de Mijas. It is the perfect spot if you want to relax or take a look around the nearby towns and villages.

Originally a small fishing village it is now a hotspot for holiday makers with a population of 73787 residents. Full of interesting, winding streets, shops, flowers and entertainment it is a good choice for a family holiday.

The Costa Del Sol translates to the coast of the sun, and it means just that. The climate here is one of the best in Europe and Mijas is perfectly situated for beaches, water sports and other nearby towns such as Marbella, Fuengirola and the city of Malaga. Mijas has two main parts to it. Mijas Costa which is the sea front to the town and and Mijas Pueblo which is the old traditional side and is situated up on the hill.

Mijas Pueblo itself is a pretty little Andalusian white village, with some of the best views along the coast. One of the more traditional feeling villages, it offers great Andalusian tapas at low prices and if you like sardines you should head down to one of the local beaches and try the barbeque sardines, grilled in upturned boats. Attentively if sardines are not up your street then Mijas offers a good range of international restaurants including Mexican, Japanese, German and Italian.

The beaches of Mijas cover around 12 kilometers of coastline, the villages of El Chaparral, La Cala, El Combo and Calahonda are all within close driving distance and offer some of the best beaches in the area. El Faro is one of the most visited beaches along the Mijas Costa, and has a rocky part leading off to nice white sands, a good spot for the kids to spend the day.

The beach of Calahonda is the longest of the Mijas beaches stretching 4,500 meters, with soft white sand and clear waters, beach bars and restaurants lined all along the sea front. It is also the perfect beach for activities and water sports, but you can always find a quieter corner if it is relaxation you are looking for.

Mijas is also admired among golfers with 30 of the 60 golf courses on the Costa Del Sol, the two courses in Mijas are the clubs of Los Lagos and Los Olivos, and only a 20 minute drive to Torrequebrada which hosted the Spanish Open and other world class championships.

Mijas has long been famous for one of it's traditions of the donkey taxis which are lined along the central plaza. A newly built Donkey statue was put in place at the beginning of last year in honor of the donkeys and what they resemble to Mijas.

Mijas is a web of cobbled, quaint narrow streets that are lined on terraces. As you get higher up in the village you come across step like streets and the higher up you get the quieter it becomes and the cheaper the coffees are. The village is coloured with flowers, red tiled roofs and archways.

Close to Mijas is Marbella, only a short drive and is the perfect spot for people watching, seeing the big yachts and posh cars. Take a walk down Puerto Banus and get a taste of the high life.

If you are looking for days out and to see a bit of Andalusia, you are perfectly situated in Mijas to visit the cities of Malaga, Cordoba, Granada with it's snowy Sierra Nevada mountains and Seville. Alternatively Gibraltar is only a hour and a half away by car.
